Product: Dr. Footers Lace‑To‑Toe (Monkey) Boots — Technical Specifications

Overview

Classic work-boot design inspired by 1940s lineman and lumberjack boots.

Distinctive extended lace‑to‑toe opening for enhanced fit and protection.

Intended use: climbing, heavy labor, general workwear, and heritage fashion.

Construction: recraftable, repair-focused build for longevity.

Models and Variants

Heights:

7‑inch (short): ankle-to-lower‑calf boot for greater mobility.

12‑inch (tall): mid‑calf for increased protection and support.

Stitch Styles:

Straight stitch: traditional linear stitch line.

Wave stitch: decorative undulating stitch line along vamp/upper seams.

Toe Profile:

Minimized, rounded toe that extends upward into the lace‑to‑toe pattern.

Upper Materials

Leather:

Full‑grain, vegetable‑tanned or oil‑tanned leather options.

Thickness: 2.4–3.2 mm (3–4 oz) typical for upper panels; reinforcements 3.0–3.6 mm where required.

Characteristics: high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, develop natural patina.

Reinforcements:

Double‑layered toe and vamp reinforcements (same leather or compatible tougher grade).

Heel counter: molded leather or leather over composite shank for stability.

Eyelets & Hooks:

Eyelets: solid brass or nickel‑plated brass; diameter sized for #4–#5 laces.

Speed hooks (upper): forged steel or brass, secured with rivets; quantity varies by height (7" ≈ 4 pairs hooks; 12" ≈ 6 pairs hooks).

Lining:

Full or partial leather lining (calfskin goatskin) or choice of breathable canvas/poly blend for reduced break-in.

Seams taped or skived to reduce bulk at toe and tongue.

Closure & Fit

Lace‑to‑toe construction — lacing extends forward over vamp to near toe cap, allowing fine adjustment across forefoot.

Laces: round waxed cotton or polyester, diameter 3.0–4.0 mm, length dependent on model: 7" ≈ 54–63 in (137–160 cm); 12" ≈ 72–78 in (183–198 cm).

Tongue: gusseted or non‑gusseted variants available — gusseted tongue recommended for debris/weather protection.

Lasts: built on narrow/neutral lasts with slight toe spring; available in standard D (medium) width with optional EE (wide) upon order.

Construction

Primary methods: Goodyear Welt or handsewn (Norwegian/Stitchdown options for select models).

Welt:

Full Goodyear welt with leather or rubber filler for recraftability.

Welt width: typical 8–10 mm.

Stitching:

Lockstitch for welt; heavy-duty thread: bonded polyester or linen-waxed, 0.9–1.2 mm diameter.

Stitch density: 6–8 stitches per inch for welt stitching; reinforced areas 8–10 spi.

Insole & Midsole:

Insole board: cork‑filled leatherboard or molded fiberboard.

Midsole: leather midsole standard; rubber midsole options for added shock absorption.

Cork bed: initial cork fill underfoot for comfort and custom shaping over time.

Shank:

Steel or composite shank located under arch for torsional support.

Shank length: full or 3/4 depending on model specifications.

Outsole:

Standard: wedge rubber or lugged Vibram rubber outsole.

Options:

Industrial oil‑resistant lug sole (Vibram 100/Arctic Grip variants).

Crepe or wedge rubber for heritage look.

Outsole thickness: 6–12 mm depending on compound and profile.

Heel:

Stacked leather heel with rubber top lift or full rubber heel block.

Height: standard 25–35 mm; work variants may use higher heel for traction.

Performance & Protection

Durability: designed for heavy use and recraftable via resoling and upper repairs.

Water resistance: naturally water‑resistant full‑grain leather; optional factory waterproofing and sealed welt.

Thermal: leather insulative properties; optional insulated lining for cold climates.

Ankle support: high lace closure and reinforced heel counter provide strong support; 12" model gives increased lateral and shin protection.
